Hapkido (합기도)
Hapkido is a Korean style of self defense, utilizing pressure points and joint locks to escape from or disable an attacker. There are some striking techniques in Hapkido as well as take-downs and throws.
Based on more circular movements, Hapkido is designed to redirect and deflect attacks rather than absorbing the impact through blocking alone. Practioners seek to gain advantage through footwork and body positioning to employ leverage, avoiding the use of strength against strength.
While training varies school to school, a typical class will contain technique practice, break falling, controlled sparring, and exercises to develop internal energy/strength. Although hapkido is in some respects a "soft" art, the training is vigorous and demanding. However, strength and fitness is not a prerequisite of hapkido; what strength and fitness is necessary to perform the techniques develops naturally as a result of training.
